SUMMARY:Manufacturers Roundtable: Equalizing Hiring Demand & Supply
DESCRIPTION:This is an invitation-only Manufacturers Roundtable\, exclusive to members of the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce: Manufacturers\, City and Economic Development officials\, Business Partners\, and invited guests in open dialog specific to their interests and goals. Participants learn from experts and from each other\, comparing notes about issues\, trends\, threats\, opportunities\, and best practices. Ask about joining this strong\, networked group of area manufacturers who share best practices\, issues\, and ideas for community action in a collaborative\, open forum.\n\n\n\nThis meeting is to follow up on ideas raised at the group's last meeting on April 5\, 2017:\n\n\n	\n	private funding of a school district position dedicated to connecting education to manufacturing careers (i.e. guidance counseling support\, curriculum development\, integration\, applications\, public awareness\, marketing\, etc.)\,\n	\n	\n	continued networking to explore clustered capabilities and common supply chains. \n	\n	\n	Address the skills gap through local education: \n\n	\n \n Invite new Decatur Public School Superintendent and other educational leaders. \n \n \n Our message: not just "what we need from our schools"\, but "what we have FOR our schools".\n \n \n Integrate related school events into a schedule leading up to Manufacturing Day activities being coordinated by the EDC\n \n	\n	\n\n\nBACKGROUND:\n\nAsk a kid\, "Would you rather be Ironman or Mark Zuckerberg?"\n\nParticipants from the April discussion identified the opportunity for branding a local manufacturing careers education effort. Why? A growing gap exists between manufacturer's need for new hires and a local qualified\, available workforce. The gap is defined by a deficit in job applicants\, and among those who do apply there is a lack of awareness\, a lack of technical skills\, as well as basic academic skills\, communication/human relation skills\, attitudes\, habits and goals.\n\n\n\n"We need a succession pipeline to replace accelerating Baby Boomer retirement from skilled labor jobs. The average age of a heavy equipment operator is 53 years old." \n\n~David Tyrolt\, Dunn & Co.\n\n\n\n "We need to move career guidance from 'What do you want to be?' to 'What do you like doing?'"\n\n~Jerry Buckley\, CNC Training Solutions\, LLC
