The Decatur Area Arts Council presents SIMPLY MIDWEST: The Photography of Gil Lebois from September 5-29 in the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Madden Arts Center, 125 N. Water St. in downtown Decatur. As a relative newcomer to Central Illinois, French photographer Gil Lebois brings a fresh perspective to our landscape and subjects that surround us here in the Midwest. In his words, “When you come from France, everything you see is new to you. The way of life, houses, cars, landscapes, trucks . . . it’s a little bit as if I was watching an American movie for real, or even better, being a part of it.”
While Lebois spent most of his career in France as a photographer for magazines, advertising, commercial projects and journalism, he now focuses on his portrait and fine art work. His work speaks to his keen awareness of lighting and the effects of light. He often incorporates flashes and strobes to achieve his results. He credits much of his inspiration to the techniques used by American photographers.
The exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. For more information, contact the Decatur Area Arts Council at 423-3189.
