The ability of law enforcement to keep the public safe and to protect the rights of crime victims depends in large part upon the assistance of everyday citizens. We are all too often confronted with apathy and a lack of cooperation, which can make the job of effective criminal prosecution difficult. Those who are willing to be vigilant citizens, to provide information to the authorities, to appear in court and testify, or to provide other support to law enforcement or victims, make it possible for us to successfully prosecute criminals in our community, and are the reason Macon County's crime rates continue to decline and to remain at lower levels than other similar counties in Illinois. During our first two Exemplary Citizen Awards Ceremonies, we recognized 26 citizens who went above and beyond in helping us fight crime. We have compiled an equally impressive list of 21 award recipients who assisted us over the course of the past year, one of which request no public recognition.
