Engineering Technician II

Starting Pay:  $30.37/hour                   Increases to: $33.13/hour after 6 months         
    
Join our team as an Engineering Technician II, and you’ll manage capital construction projects, lead survey crews, and gather vital public infrastructure data. You’ll also prepare detailed engineering plans, maps, estimates, and reports. Ensure City standards are met by reviewing and monitoring private development projects and conducting final inspections. Your expertise will help resolve engineering-related inquiries and complaints. Key Responsibilities
Project Oversight & Compliance
  • Oversee capital construction projects, ensuring compliance with City standards and managing essential project documentation.
  • Measure work progress, process payments, and conduct final acceptance inspections of private development projects.
  • Direct and conduct testing of contractor's work and materials, utilizing and adjusting basic testing equipment.
  • Issue permits for water and sewer taps; perform field inspections for contractor compliance.
  • Review plans and specifications for adherence to City standards.
Surveying & Engineering
  • Serve as survey party chief or crew member, using equipment such as transits, levels, GPS, and electronic total stations.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, designs, details, and standards from complex survey notes or electronic data.
  • Compile data and prepare preliminary reports on public infrastructure, including location, dimensions, and condition.
Data Management & Documentation
  • Update permanent engineering files, records, and maps to document changes, additions, and corrections to City infrastructure.
  • Research property ownership and legal descriptions at the County Clerk's office.
  • Provide field locates for City water and sewer facilities.



Public Interaction & Support
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public, consultants, contractors, agencies, utility companies, and City departments regarding engineering operations.
  • Address public complaints related to street, drainage, water, and sewer issues.
Qualifications and Preferred Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with additional vocational or college courses in civil engineering, surveying, or construction.
  • Three years of relevant experience in civil engineering, engineering technology, or surveying; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and ArcGIS preferred.
 
Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong grasp of mathematics, including trigonometry.
  • Basic proficiency in Excel.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering and surveying principles, practices, and equipment.
  • Understanding of construction practices and equipment.
  • Competence in using computers and relevant software.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in applying engineering standards and specifications to evaluate work.
  • Capacity to plan, organize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in drafting with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication with various stakeholders.
  • Physical stamina for outdoor work in adverse conditions at construction sites.
  • Valid State of Illinois driver's license.

The City of Decatur does not provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B). To be considered for regular employment with City of Decatur, applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a continuous basis.

Residency Requirement
The Engineering Technician II position is covered under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) collective bargaining agreement.  AFSCME employees shall reside within 50 miles of the corporate limits of City of Decatur.  An appointee may reside outside said limits but must comply no later than 90 days after the completion of the six-month probationary period.
