Description
Arts at the Decatur Park District is proud to present The Wizard of Oz. Follow the yellow brick road to the Decatur Civic Center, 1 Gary K Anderson Plaza, on March 15 at 7 p.m., 16 at 2 and 7 p.m., and 17 at 2 p.m. Performances are composed of over 140 youth from the Decatur area ranging in ages from 5 - 18.
This show tells the classic tale of Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto who are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz, and embark on a quest with new friends she makes along the way to see the Wizard, who can return her to her home and fulfill the others' wishes.
Cultural Arts Manager Megan Dickerson says about the program, “The true purpose of arts education is not necessarily to create more professional artists. It is to create more complete human beings who are critical thinkers, with curious minds, great work ethic, and dedication. The Arts are an investment in the future. We are so fortunate that our ARTS programs have been ALIVE for 52 years and we are excited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Decatur Park District with this classic story of American fantasy. The Wizard of Oz has been a way to educate and explore themes of friendship between strangers; of journey and home; of humans succeeding against the odds and to achieve goals, it is very important to accept and face your fears head-on. It’s more than just a show it’s a wonderful lesson for life!”
