Understanding cultural humility and its application to social work practice: the essentials. This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of cultural humility and its application to social work practice: the essentials. This workshop will discuss cultural humility and provide context for the difference between cultural competence and humility as well as the essential aspects for application to social work practice. Exploration of self- awareness and ethical considerations related to cross cultural aspects will be an important focus.
Mary E. Garrison, MSW, LCSW, ACSW is a Professor of Social Work at Millikin University. Mary has had extensive practice experience in the social work field, with over 20 years of practice in mental health services, policy and advocacy. Mary is a past recipient of the NASW Illinois Social Worker of the Year Award, the Cesar Chavez Social Justice Award and the first ever recipient of the Macon County Continuum of Care Advocate of the Year Award. Mary recently published a co-authored book entitled “Your Playbook for Beating Depression: Essential Strategies for Managing and Living with Depression”.
