Fleet Mechanic

Starting Pay: $29.14/hour
Increases to: $30.57/hour after 6-month probation

Key Responsibilities:
• Diagnose and repair City vehicles and equipment, including inspections, adjustments, and part replacements
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure safety and reliability
• Order required parts and salvage usable components when possible
• Maintain accurate records of all repair and maintenance work performed
 
Needed Knowledge and Skills:
• High school diploma, GED, or vocational school graduation
• Apprenticeship or training in vehicle/equipment repair work or equivalent training and experience
• Valid Illinois driver’s license
• Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation, maintenance, and mechanical systems
• Familiarity with vehicle and equipment repair methods, tools, and trade practices
• Basic understanding of welding techniques including arc, acetylene, torch, MIG, and TIG
• Ability to diagnose, service, and maintain a wide variety of vehicles and equipment
• Skilled in the use and care of hand tools, power tools, welders, and diagnostic equipment
• Must provide own set of SAE and metric hand tools
• Ability to read and follow repair manuals as well as oral and written instructions
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision
