Security Officer and Dispatcher

This position serves a dual role as a Public Safety security officer and dispatcher for the institution.  Ensuring the safety of the community via diligent patrol, life safety checks, and service to the campus community.  They also ensure the safety of the community, via monitoring of campus alarm systems, phone lines, radio network, weather/news sources, handling walk in customers and acting as an ambassador of the department and University. 

This position has been designated as an “Essential” Employee under the Emergency Preparedness Plan in order to ensure that University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of public health or other emergencies, including those that require Millikin University to close or restrict operations.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

Act as the first point of contact for any emergency or non-emergency calls and are responsible for assisting the caller to a department and/or assisting the caller as needed
Manage a multi-line control system and be able to use it in a high-pressure or emergency situation
Use a wide variety of communication systems to answer and respond to customer questions, including phones, computers and radios
Daily patrol activity to ensure campus safety and security
Security staffing of special events and programs
Life safety checks of campus buildings and systems
Securing and un-securing of campus buildings and classrooms
General Investigation and reporting of incidents on campus
Enforcement of University rules and regulations
Maintain secure control of lost and found or evidentiary items
Act as a first responder in crisis situations, including medical emergencies
Observe and report any suspicious activity, threats to campus safety, or other concerns
Provide safety escorts to campus community members as needed
Act as customer service representative for the department
Monitor and use university radio network to support Public Safety personnel in the field
Monitor and respond to university alarm (fire/burglar/panic) systems
Monitor university access control system
Monitor weather alert radio
Monitor radio scanner for potential safety threats to campus
Maintain department databases, including parking program
Administer sign out of key sets and issued keys
Administer sign out of university vehicles
Serve as 24-hour contact point for university administration
Utilize the crisis communication networks for the institution as directed
Other job-related duties as assigned.
 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

 Minimum Education and/or Experience  

High School Diploma/GED required, associate's degree or higher preferred
Prior Military, Corrections, Law Enforcement, Dispatch, Security preferred. 
Microsoft Office Suite
First aid/CPR/AED
Criminal/civil/regulatory investigations
Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
Ability to organize
Problem solving
Attention to detail; time management; work prioritization to meet deadlines
Ability to adapt and adjust sometimes on short notice
Mental toughness to perform and lead during crisis.
