Database Administrator

The City of Decatur is hiring a Database Administrator to join our Information Technology team and manage the enterprise databases powering critical City operations — public safety, finance, utilities, permitting, asset management, and our ERP systems.
This is a technical leadership role where you'll partner with IT staff, vendors, and department leaders to keep mission-critical systems secure, high-performing, and reliable.
What You'll Do
- Install, configure, and optimize enterprise databases (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or similar)
- Monitor database health, tune performance, and manage upgrades and patching
- Support high availability, disaster recovery, and backup/restoration strategies
- Administer database security, permissions, and compliance with data protection standards
- Support ERP, public safety, finance, and other business-critical applications
- Develop stored procedures, scripts, and automation tools for reporting and operations
- Maintain documentation and provide technical guidance across the organization
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of progressively responsible enterprise database administration experience
- Strong SQL development skills — stored procedures, scripting, performance tuning
- Knowledge of database architecture, indexing, query optimization, and disaster recovery
- Valid Illinois driver's license
- Preferred: municipal/public sector experience, cloud database experience (Azure SQL, AWS RDS), and DP-900/DP-300 certifications

Residency Requirement
Employees must reside within 50 miles of Decatur's corporate limits within 12 months of appointment.
