$27.94/hour | Increases to $30.47/hour after six months

Full-Time, Benefited | Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Keep Decatur’s water flowing. As a Maintenance Technician I, you’ll use your mechanical and electrical skills to maintain and repair water treatment equipment, pumps, and facilities. You’ll troubleshoot mechanical failures, install electrical wiring and controls, perform welding and plumbing repairs, and complete preventive maintenance.
This is hands-on skilled trade work with a direct impact on the community. You’ll work independently and as part of an experienced crew to keep critical water infrastructure operating safely and reliably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain water treatment equipment, processes, and facilities.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including replacing bearings, seals, packing, shafts, belts, oil, and filters.
  • Perform electrical work and welding on mechanical components and equipment.
  • Install electrical wiring and controls.
  • Repair or replace pumps, building heaters, and other mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Make plumbing repairs, replace water lines, and install plumbing components.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, work areas, records, inventories, system logs, and work orders.
  • Respond to after-hours Water Production Division emergencies as needed.
  • May work intermittently as a relief Water Plant Operator I.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education & Certification
  • High school diploma or graduation from vocational school.
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in mechanical or electrical trades work or a commercial/industrial maintenance certification.
  • Valid Illinois Class D driver’s license or equivalent.
Experience
  • Four years of experience in mechanical or electrical trades or commercial/industrial maintenance, including HVAC experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of training and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and maintenance trade practices, tools, and equipment.
  • Skilled in arc, acetylene, and torch welding.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, and operation/maintenance manuals.
  • Proficiency with standard maintenance tools, machine shop equipment, computers, and software.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Ability to perform necessary math, follow instructions, maintain accurate records, and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Timely response to after-hours Water Production Division emergencies.

The position has a six-month probationary period and is covered by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement. Employees must reside within 50 miles of the City of Decatur corporate limits. An appointee may reside outside said limits but must comply no later than 90 days after the completion of the probationary period.
